Teaching Your Kids Good Personal Hygiene

Personal hygiene for kids is as important as it is for the adults and grownups. Parents should take interest in their kids grooming, and should make children’s hygiene checklist. Furthermore, they should ensure to let kids learn all types of good personal hygiene. A list of good hygiene habits should be taught every day to the kids. And also, they should be made to practice it.

Personal Hygiene for Kids

Personal hygiene for kids is crucial to ensure their healthy growth. Teaching them the basics of it is important for keeping them clean. Kids spend a lot of time in close contact with each other in classrooms, playgrounds etc.

They have higher contact with the germs and all kinds of surfaces. Therefore, it is important they should be taught all types of personal hygiene. It will ensure their cleanliness and safety. They will be saved from all kinds of infections and would remain healthy.

Teaching hygiene to preschoolers is as important as teaching personal hygiene to elementary students is. In both the cases, kids are prone to all kinds of germs and infections.  It is the utmost responsibility of parents to teach children’s hygiene checklist to them at home. Whereas in school, the responsibility falls on teachers.

Below are some of the basics of personal hygiene that should be taught to kids at different steps.

  • Washing Hands

Start with washing hands. It is the basis of all hygiene. Teach your kids to wash hands properly. Make them practice the correct technique in front of you. To ensure their fast learning, you can demonstrate the process yourself rather than verbally telling. You can also take help of posters and animations.

Most of the germs enter into our bodies through our hands. Washing hands, is no doubt, one of the most important component of personal hygiene. Make sure your kid wash hands with soap and lathers for at least 15 seconds (with the tap turned off to conserve water) before rinsing.

In the beginning kids might splash and dash. But eventually they learn. Parents must encourage the kids to wash hands:
1. Every time after they come from play.
2. Before eating anything.
3. Every time the hands look dirty.
4. After touching pets.
5. After touching raw meat or chicken/fish.
6. After going to the toilet.
7. After blowing their nose.

  • Covering while Coughing and Sneezing

Teaching kids to cover their mouth while sneezing and coughing is one of the most important types of personal hygiene. Germs travel far and wide via a sneeze. Teach your child to cover his/her face with a tissue while sneezing and coughing. If he/she can’t fetch a tissue, they can use their arm as well.

Most of the contagious viral diseases are spread through coughing or sneezing in close contact. Children don’t understand the importance of hygiene. It is therefore parents responsibility to install all the habits in them.

List of good hygiene habits should be documented and reminded them everyday.

  • Encourage Good Oral Hygiene

Good oral hygiene practices should be a part of every kid’s routine. It is parents responsibility to instill the habit of brushing and flossing in kids at a very early age. Brushing is a skill that can be mastered over time. Once the kids are old enough, parents should supervise them to brush their teeth twice a day esp. after breakfast and before going to bed.

Kids should be taught how to floss as well. They should be taught to brush their tongue while brushing their teeth.
Moreover, the habit of rinsing mouth with a mouthwash should be encouraged as well.

In case of hyperactive and naughty kids, where they give a tough time to parents. Help of dentists can be taken as well. Parents should take their kids to the dentist.

Dentists can teach the kids about the importance of oral health and how bad oral habits can ruin their teeth. This way, they will start practicing the oral hygiene habits and take care of their teeth.

  • Bath Hygiene

Bathing ritual should have set time in kids routine. Usually, bath in the evening help the kids relax and work better. Kids should be taught about maintaining good personal hygiene and how regular bath is an important aspect of it.Parents should give bath to the younger kids themselves and must not leave them alone.

Setting up different toys in the bath tubs can also initiate their interest in bathing routine.Once the kids grow, they can be encouraged to take baths alone. Make the kids take bath twice a day. Once in the morning while other in the evening.

Kids should be taught how to clean different parts of their bodies while bathing. They should be taught about pat drying afterwards and the usage of moisturizer as well.

  • Hair Care

Taking care of your children’s hair is very important. Poor hair care in kids can cause problems like head lice, cradle cap, dandruff and other scalp infections.  For kids, it is important to wash their hair twice or thrice a week to keep it away from dirt and grease.

Washing hair too frequently should be avoided. It can cause drying out young scalps, making them more prone to dandruff. As kids grow up, they should be taught about taking care of their hair properly. Proper combing, tying and washing them on time should be made a part of kids’ routine.

  • Toileting Hygiene

Once the younger kids become toilet-trained, parents need to focus on the habits that will keep the kids’ toilet routine trained. Kids should be taught to wipe thoroughly and wash after attending the toilet. They should also be taught to flush the toilet properly after usage. And to bend the cover of the toilet seat once they are done.

The hygiene practices might be written on a board and hanged in the toilet so the kids don’t forget anything. Parents should also teach their children to wash hands properly after using toilet. These healthy habits will ensure to keep the infections and irritation away.

  • Personal Hygiene Activities for Elementary Kids

As kids grow up, in order to reinforce their hygiene habits, different activities could be arranged for them. This way they will learn and memorize the healthy habits in a fun way.

When taught through different activities and with other kids, children tend to learn quickly as well as, enjoy the process too. Fun learning should be encouraged. Kids tend to retain that knowledge for a longer duration of time.

There are many activities and games where kids can be involved and taught.
Some of them are:

  • Germ transfer game – A safe game that teaches kids how germs transfer from one person to the other.
  • Glitter hands – A fun game that lets the kids get a little dirty and later on, reinforce the importance of cleanliness and washing hands.
  • Good habit – An enjoyable trivia kind of game that can be played with kids anywhere and could be used to teach them healthy habits.
  • Hygiene charades – Kids love to play charade. They should be involved in this activity to learn healthy habits in a fun way.
  • Personal hygiene worksheets – Creativity and learning at the same time. Best suited for kids of all ages.

Personal hygiene is important for children. It keeps the healthy and away from illnesses.
