World no tobacco day is celebrated on the 31st of May with the partnership of World Health Organization. World No Tobacco Day is meant to improve the health of public by addressing the serious hazards related to smoking and the use of tobacco. It is clear, however, that despite the well-known health risks associated with smoking, many people continue to smoke and will do so in the near future. How to quit smoking seems a tough task for them.

The World Health Organization (WHO) predicts that there will be more than 1 billion people who smoke in 2025, about the same number as today.

The theme for this year is, “Tobacco and Lung Health.

The campaign would focus on,

Main Purpose

The campaign will serve as a call for raising awareness regarding the harmful effects of tobacco usage on health. It will also focus on controlling tobacco production and spreading awareness among the masses in order to completely eradicate its consumption. It will serve as a tool for alarming the smokers and persuading them to slowly consider quitting the habit. Moreover, importantly, light will be shed on the topic of passive smoking/secondhand smoking – the most neglected issue in today’s world. Smokers not only put their lives in danger but also of those around them who aren’t actively involved in smoking.

Tobacco Usage

The newer tobacco products have the same chemicals as the old ones. Aside from causing deaths directly, it also lead to many fatal lung diseases. It is also important to note that exposure of tobacco is a threat to lung health for everyone, not just smokers. Tobacco smoke contributes to indoor air pollution, which is one of the major threats to lung health. Every year, more than 1 million deaths take place because of second-hand smoke, according to World Health Organization. This year, the World Tobacco Day is going to be celebrated with the motive of how to quit smoking? The mantra will be national quit smoking day. Every citizen of a responsible society will be pledged to reduce and eventually, quit the habit of smoking.

Harmful Effects Caused by the Usage of Tobacco

While talking about the usage of tobacco, it is important to highlight all the health hazards that it can cause.

  10. In addition to the well-documented link with lung cancer, smoking cigarettes can also contribute to other forms of cancer.
  11. Smoking cigarettes can cause pancreatic and esophageal cancers as well.
  12. It also contributes towards causing laryngeal, liver, throat, kidney and cervical cancers.
  13. Tobacco usage damages oral cavity and puts one at a higher risk to poor oral hygiene.
